DC/DC Converter: what this category covers

A DC/DC converter turns one DC voltage into another regulated one, and some types also separate input from output. This category covers non-isolated buck, boost and boost-buck modules, plus isolated converters for instrumentation. Inputs are normally drawn from 12V, 24V, 36V, 48V and 72V batteries or vehicle systems; typical outputs are 5V, 12V, 13.8V, 19V, 24V and 48V. If your supply comes from AC mains, these modules are not the right fit, and our AC/DC power supply range covers those instead.

Which converter architecture fits your project

  • Battery bank step-down. Dropping 36V, 48V or 72V to a usable 12V or 13.8V rail is the normal job of a non-isolated buck DC/DC converter. Efficiency stays highest while the input remains above the output, so this is the standard route for powering electronics from a higher-voltage vehicle battery.

  • 12V rail step-up. To drive 19V, 24V or 48V radios, pumps and accessories from a 12V source, specify a non-isolated boost DC/DC converter. A boost stage keeps the load on one supply instead of adding a second battery.

  • Overlapping input and output range. A vehicle battery may sit anywhere between 9V and 40V while the output has to hold at 24V. A non-isolated boost-buck converter regulates in both directions, so no manual switching between modes is needed.

  • Isolated input and output. Signal chains, sensors and instrumentation need an isolated type DC/DC converter, which breaks the electrical connection between the two sides and holds the isolation barrier at its rated voltage.

Key parameters to verify

  • The real input voltage window, not only the nominal rating. A 12V alternator system can swing from 9V to 16V, and a 48V battery pack reads higher while charging.

  • Continuous current draw against the peak current your load needs at start-up, especially with motors and other inductive loads.

  • Whether galvanic isolation is required, or whether input and output may share a common ground.

  • Ambient temperature where the unit is mounted, which sets the thermal derating and the usable output current.

  • Ingress protection and terminal style, for example IP67 or IP68 with cable or bolt connections.

  • Electrical noise limits and the protection functions your downstream load demands, such as over-voltage, over-current and reverse-polarity protection.
